WALKING THE HISTORICAL WAY FROM BERGAMO CITY TO THE PASSO SAN MARCO

A MEDIUM HIKING TRIP WITH GUIDE AND LUGGAGE TRANSPORT, START AND END IN BERGAMO CITY

Do you want to follow in the footsteps of the merchants who transported goods between the territory of the Venetians to northern Europe?  Come along with us, walking through our valley from the city of Bergamo to the ending pass against Switzerland.
A wonderful hiking trip where we have 5 days on foot and we make our way along the trade route that spread the rich Venetian products up to northern Europe. Along this road, the structure of the post office was created with stamps such as postage and deliveries that would quickly spread information at an affordable price for everyone. Penny black, the first stamp, will we see when we stop for food and rest in one of the important tax stations along via Mercatorum, via Priula and via del Ferro - all important trade routes.
The river Brembo follows us most of the way, until we ascend the mountains and strive for the pass, San Marco. A hiking trip where we have help with luggage from hotel to hotel so that our hiking days suit most hikers.

PROGRAM FOR THE TRIP

Day 1, - ARRIVAL BERGAMO
We gather at the hotel / B&B during the evening for a short walk in the city and evening dinner together and talk about our coming days on foot.
Food incl: evening dinner, with drinks

Day 2, - FROM BERGAMO CITY, VIA MERCATORUM, TO SELVINO
We start from the hotel / B&B and the backpack is packed for a day trip with a change of clothes depending on the weather. The rest of our luggage is transferred to our next accommodation.
Our guide meets us and we start our walk out of Bergamo and its clutter and traffic to find and follow via Mercatorum. Via Mercatorum is the oldest of the area's trade routes and parts of the road we can trace as far back as Roman times. We follow streets that soon turn into smaller roads in stone that wind their way and take us to the various places that hosted the merchants who set off on their journey. We eat lunch along the way at a local restaurant.
Today's hike is about 6-7 hours including break and we walk about 800 hight meters.
Food incl: Breakfast, lunch and evening dinner with drinks

Day 3, - FURTHER UP IN THE VALLEY BREMBANA
After a good night's sleep and breakfast, we set off with new energy and big steps. We experience the small villages and areas with roads that meander in the classic serpentine way, back and forth in the mountains. We spend the night in smaller hotels / B & Bs in one of our small charming communities, in the middle of the hills and the grazing cows.
Today's hike is about 6 hours including a break and about 500 hight meters up and the same effort down.
Mat incl; Breakfast, lunch, evening dinner with drinks

Day 4, - WE PASS DOSSENA AND GOES DOWN TO THE RIVER BREMBO
We pass Dossena one of the most important resorts in history during this period. We go down to the bottom of the valley through the forest and cross the river Brembo which flows through the entire valley. In the afternoon we are welcomed to one of the most important villages during the first important period of the trade route, Cornello dei Tasso . Today the village is a "Borgo" and well worth a visit with its small but very nice museum about the development of the post and mail services.
Today's hike is about 6 hours, we mostly go down, 800 m and up about 400 meters.
Food incl: Breakfast, lunch, evening dinner with drinks

Day 5, - VIA PRIULA TAKES US FURTHER UP IN THE VALLEY
The modern trade route takes over, via Priula  and sometimes we have to walk a bit on the bike path along the river or take a turn up and over a cliff to move on. Today, the trade road has given space for today's traffic and the paved road. The luggage is transported further on and we follow. We pass the crossroads of the valley, where the main road divides as in a Y. To the right it winds its way to the end of the road so we choose to go to the left. The road leading up into the mountains towards our final destination, Passo San Marco.
Today's tour is about 6 hours including a break and has about 500 hight meters.
Food incl: Breakfast, lunch evening dinner with drinks

Day 6, - LAST STEPS TO PASSO SAN MARCO
Today our goal is to reach the final destination Passo San Marco, but we have a bit left ... today it goes uphill, slowly step by step and at a comfortable pace. We have about 1000 meters of altitude to walk, through the small villages, sections of forest and then get up into the mountains where the green fields open up the landscape and give us beautiful views. Here the cows go for their summer stay and it is breathtakingly beautiful. We take our last forces for the day and step up towards the pass, here we have a glorious view of the valley down to Valtellina, in the background we see some of the highest mountain peaks in Switzerland. Here, the border posts with walls reminding of the second world war and the strategy to stop the enemies along the mountains ridge.

We end the hike with an aperitif at an altitude of 2000 meters while we wait for our transfer that brings us back to Bergamo . Tonight's dinner is taken at a local restaurant in Bergamo.
Food incl: Breakfast, picnic lunch, evening dinner with drinks

Day 7, - END OF YOUR ADVENTURE
After breakfast the trip is over and you choose to go directly to the airport or if you want to stay a few more days in the charming city.
